Considerations criteria for roof selection

Before starting a project of construction and deciding which house is right for you, it is critical to think about the functional design of a house, we have to think also about topographic condition, estimate cost, climatic condition, appearance and maintenance cost. For this the important part of house we consider is a roof. The roof defines the look of a house more than any other attribute, and the shape of the roof will determine how the roof protects the house from rain, wind, sun and snow.

I have been asking myself what types of the roof is best for the house whether is flat roof or pitched roof. I love this question because it gets at the logic that can be employed to see how a given house design will predict required maintenance and rain water drainage. We are going to see how we can select the type of roof according to different condition

Pitched roof are roof which have greater slope while flat roof is the roof of low slope, However All roofs should be sloped to drain. The roof selection between pitched and flat roof depends from different factor as listed below.
Pitched roof are less expensive to install and easy maintenance and also is taking low cost in repairing. This is because shingle systems are easier to install than membrane systems and shingles cost less. And also have good appearance which attracts people for outlook.
Pitched roof is good for water drain its means pitched roof increased drainage capacity. With severe region thunderstorms, it is important to have a roof that is able to handle large amounts of rain. In addition to the increased drainage that pitched roofs offer, they also afford you the opportunity to create more space inside of the house.

Only negative effect of pitched roof is very expensive due to additional building materials its means construction of pitched roof increase the cost of materials used. Pitched roofs also place more stress on a home’s foundation than flat roofs.
Generally, flat roofs are cheaper to install at the time of construction than pitched roofs. Additionally, flat roofs are significantly easier to walk on for maintenance and inspections Not only that, they are also of high quality and high performance, making them the cost-effective option. You can do many things with your flat roof.
Flat roofs, on the other hand, are more suitable for complex buildings or structures with various levels. This is because if you install a pitched roof on this kind of building, it would require a more complicated rafter system. Flat roofs are also more ideal for large spans since building rafters to support large spans are not only complex but also expensive and impractical.

Negative effect of Flat roofs have the tendency to retain water on the top of the home or building and stagnant water can damage not only the exterior of the structure but also the furniture and carpet inside once it finds a way to go down.
Finally according to the geographical location and the need of people, you would be wise to consider the relative benefits and drawbacks of various roof lines as you look at houses to buy.

Don’t consider the quality of house with external appearance

Many designers from developing countries put their much effort on external design rather than interior design, this attracts many people to look for interior features but they become disappointed because it is different from what their think before.

                                               External appearance
Most designing today is based on the actual structural appearance. One will perceive from the exterior rather than the functional use of the interior;but both must be taken into consideration.
Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment for the betterment of human functionality. Interior designers must be highly skilled in order to create interior environments that are functional and safe to the building for attracting the people to be comfortable.

                                                        Modern dining room

It is not good to consider external appearance more than interior because people need to be comfortable day per day .We have to focus on people welfare rather than external appearance.

SETTING OUT OF A BUILDING PLAN ON GROUND

Before starting a building construction engineers have to set out the ground for defining clear breadth of excavation for foundation and the center line of the walls, which will help in carrying out the same house as it is designed on its architectural plan. There are many methods used during the setting out, some of them are the following: 3-4-5 method, the rope method and the single prismatic square and the double prismatic square. The 3-4-5 method of setting out is generally preferred and adopted, as it is the easiest among others.

                                           Plan view of the house

We are going to set out on the ground the architectural plan view above, firstly the center line of the walls are calculated. Then the center lines of the rooms are to be settled out by using 3:4:5 Method. With this method we need firstly to set out a right angle from a certain point on the base line.
For us to set out right angles on the field, we need a measuring tape, two ranging poles, pegs and three persons. With this measuring tape, the first person have to hold on zero mark and on twelve mark, the second person  hold the three mark between his/her thumb and index finger, and then the third person holds the eight mark.
After all sides of the measuring tape are stretched, we obtain  a rectangular triangle with lengths 3 m, 4 m and 5 m as it is indicated on the figure below, hence the angle of the first person is a right angle. Which can allow us to use multiples of 3 m, 4 m and 5 m.  e.g. 6 m, 8 m and 10 m or  9 m, 12 m and 15 m.  Etc.
                                                   3-4-5 method

The same process is to be repeated at every corner of a building for you to obtain a right angle on each corner. And this is how we set out a building on the field, using the 3-4-5 method!
After the setting out the excavation of foundation have to be started and other construction works could proceed up to the roof and final works of the building.

Resistance of building structures to earthquakes

After the earthquake which has been occurred in East Africa just 2 days ago and destroyed many buildings, we wonder to build an earthquake-proof building. During a very strong earthquake, even the best engineered building may suffer severe damage. Engineers design buildings to withstand as much sideways motion as possible in order to minimize damage to the structure and give the occupants time to get out safely.

Buildings are basically designed to support a vertical load in order to support the walls, roof and all occupants to keep them standing. Earthquakes present a lateral, or sideways, load to the building structure that is a bit more complicated to account for. One way to make a simple structure more resistant to these lateral forces is to tie the walls, floor, roof, and foundations into a rigid box that holds together when shaken by a quake.

The most dangerous building construction, from an earthquake point of view, is unreinforced brick or concrete block.  Generally, this type of construction has walls that are made of bricks stacked on top of each other and held together with mortar.  The roof is laid across the top.  The weight of the roof is carried straight down through the wall to the foundation.  When this type of construction is subject to a lateral force from an earthquake the walls overturn from normal position and the roof falls in like a house of cards. From this we use reinforced concrete in sup structure as plinth beams, middle and continues lintel. SUBSOIL EXPLORATION AND SITE INVESTGATION

Before starting of any structure like multistory building or other structure more loaded firstly we have to make subsoil exploration in order to obtain information used in design and construction  of foundation , since  foundation transmit all load from structure to the soil .

Subsoil exploration is the process of obtain soil stratification at a given site or determining the layers of natural the soil deposit that will underlie the proposed structural and their physical property, this process done because engineers need to know information that will help then in determining the nature of soil at the site and its stratification and in Selecting the type and depth of foundation suitable for a given structure.

nature of the soil at site

Engineers also their need to know information for evaluating the load-bearing capacity of the foundation, information help them in estimating the probable settlement of a structure ,location of ground water table, the depth and nature of bedrock ,investigation of safety of existing structural, suitability of the soil and degree of compaction.

Subsoil exploration of structural are divided in three phase such as Collection of Preliminary Information, Reconnaissance and Site Investigation, this phase of site investigation provide reliable, specific and detail information about the soil and ground water condition of the site, and consist of Planning; making test boreholes; collecting soil samples at desired intervals for visual observation and laboratory tests.

sample of the soil are collected at desired intervals
In determination of the number of boring there is no hard-and-fast rule exists for determining the number of borings are to be advanced. For most buildings, at least one boring at each corner and one at the center should provide a start. Spacing can be increased or decreased, depending on the condition of the subsoil for more information contact RICIltd at bizididace1@gmail.com and one phone +250786321632

Design of staircase from archicad by using fill

Many designers and engineers experience a big problems of designing and constructing staircase in the building but there is better method in which staircase be designed by using Archicad.

Stair is a set of steps leading from one floor to another,so good method of designing irregular staircase use fill and line tools( any color) to draw out the shape of stair need, firstly click on fill tools from archicad and draw out the shape of staircase.

From archicad tools click on the line and draw out the line of travel ( like center line) and then after make the selection of fill and line(select all together), after click on design from archicad toolbar and then go to create stair using selection(this is from design) and click OK.

According to the staircase needed we can modify your stair by changing rise, fall, height, rending and so on....and click OK, so after go on stair situated on the left side( stair from design tool) and click any where from the paper.
